It is home of over 30 research institutions, including the Technische Universität Darmstadt, where the AOSD Summer School will take place. But Darmstadt is not only known as a city of science, but also for its notable architecture. While the Mathildenhöhe is the centerpiece of an ensemble of so-called Jugendstil buildings from the the early 20th century, only recently the Waldspirale, designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, has been added to Darmstadt's skyline. And visible from atop the Waldspirale are the skyscrapers of Frankfurt, the region's biggest city, and a mere 30 km to the north of Darmstadt.
